FRI. JULY 25

Today’s agenda at the Con begins with a multitude of panels and conversations for comic book collectors, artists, and fans in general. All sorts of aspects from how to collect, to proper storage and documentation, to the legal panel, and several creative panels as well, and the Masquerade 101 panel explaining how the very popular Masquerade Ball works, and how to do your costuming. Not to forget, for those who have kids, that they do offer a lot for children to do while their parents cavort around the Con.

11:15 was time for the “Powerpuff Girls” 10th Anniversary, featuring the three voices of the Powerpuffers themselves - Cathy Cavandini, Tara Strong, and Elizabeth Daily. There’s something very clever about that cartoon that appealed to adults as well as kids, not to mention the “female empowerment” angle throughout.

Around noon we tried but weren’t able to get into the long-awaited “Watchmen” film panel. From all that was talked about later, this looks to be a blockbuster.

2:45 brought us to what we were waiting to see - another Samuel L. Jackson extravaganza! This time Sam plays the villain in the live-action film version of “The Spirit.” This, of course, being the title given to the prestigious awards at Comic Con. From how the previews looked, we have high hopes for this flick. Can’t wait!

At 7:15 was the return of the incredible “Mystery Science Theater 3000” cast and crew for their 20th Anniversary. (A lot of anniversaries this year.) A great panel all the way around discussing all the absurdities of bad films and how to mock them.

Later in the evening came a conundrum indeed. At 9:30 was a show called “Worst Cartoons Ever” that featured some of the truly bad cartoons, while at 10:30 was the “Spike & Mike” show, which - although having a history of some of the most creative and memorable disgusting humor animation - actually did have truly horrendous animation. One claimed to be bad, the other was guaranteed just by recent history. When we got into the “Spike & Mike Gauntlet,” we were let down - it was in fact as bad as we expected, which caused half of the audience to leave early. All in all, there was one cartoon that elicited a chuckle or two. The rest were poorly created, with zero story conception, and/or just plain gross for the sake of desensitized grossness. Bad, bad, bad. Come on guys. Someone out there has got to be coming up with the newest “Hut Sluts,” “Ren & Stimpy, “ or (gasp) even “Beavis & Butthead.” Anyone?

Following that, to clear our palette, it was a jaunt to the downtown, 24 hour Ralph’s supermarket. Oh, how I love Ralph’s and their 24 hour openness, and their focaccia sandwiches. Yes, we live there every evening after the Con, sometimes forgoing parties (unless there’s free food).
