LIVE105 BFD 1999
June 18, 1999 - Shoreline Amphitheater - Mt. View, CA
BFD - Big Frickin' Day. This is the title of the 6th annual show put on by San Francisco radio station Live105 (KITS) at the Shoreline Amphitheater in Mt. View, CA. As always, the BFD concerts showcase all the best new bands along with some seasoned elder favorites. Live105's BFD is one of several "radio show" festival concerts put on around the country every summer. These types of shows are the best way to capture what is new on radio and around the country musically with all types of sounds and styles represented throughout the day. As with a lot of shows though, things weren't all smoothness in entirety, but the 6th annual BFD brought music to happy fans and ended with a satisfied feeling of appreciation.

A few lessons were to be learned from this day though. Technically, the show would have gone smoother if there wasn't the emphasis on seats fronting the main stage. It seems ridiculous to put on a show at a seated amphitheater when the music performed is particularly heavy dance-oriented or moshing punk rock. Either Live105 needs to relocate it's annual BFD show to a more appropriate setting or Shoreline Amphitheater should consider relaxing it's seating rules to a first-come-first-served rule. During Limp Bizkit's set, there was a major rush towards the front that resulted in some "non-rush-initiated" guards singling out kids in the onslaught and dragging them out - which did nothing for the rest of the couple of thousand who remained in the front.

The show featured many artists throughout the day with some standout performances. In between set times we got a chance to talk to a few of the featured acts and get their thoughts on Live105's BFD. Not only were there great bands to watch but several athletic events as well. For the crowd mulling about, there was the conical climbing mountain which gave the adventurous the chance to do a little "rock" climbing. The Gravity Tour showcased some incredible feats of Extreme Sports. The events featured biking, blading, boarding and some fancy bike tricks provided by Andy McDonald, Tony Hawk, Matt Salerno, Jason Davies, John Parker and Art Thompson.

On with the show.....
After an introduction by a very inebriated Hank The Angry Dwarf (of the Howard Stern show), Kid Rock took the stage with a driving instrumental. Drumming was pounded hard by...... while the rest of Kid Rock's touring group, Twisted Brown Truckers, grinded the backing for Kid's heavy raps. Joe C., Kid Rock's pint-sized sidekick added his own kickin' raps.
It should be mentioned (as it was on the Howard Stern show the next Monday) that Hank The Angry Dwarf didn't have the best of times while attending the show. Apparently, being the drunk that he is, Hank went into an alcoholic seizure just after arriving at the airport. After being sedated from that episode Hank, after arriving at the Amphitheater, launched into another seizure in which he bit his tongue. The sight of blood got a few people worried about internal bleeding. Following that episode, Hank was told to either go to the hospital or stay drunk.
Orgy, one of the newer bands on the circuit, jumped back into the old-school New Age glam-gloom faze and featured guitarist Amir Derakh of ex-80s metal rockers Rough Cut. This band brings back the feel of what was fun in the 80s - covering the old hit "Blue Monday" - while melding a more polished 90s sound.
Lo-Fidelity Allstars from England performed on the second stage, providing a lush trip-hop backdrop to the extreme sports Gravity Tour athletes who provided some great feats of skating, boarding and biking.
